Vic issues massive datacentre tender

in brief The Victorian Government today released a tender to meet its whole-of-government datacentre needs for the next five years. The Government Services Group (responsible for the Victorian Efficient Government strategy — a whole-of-government approach to shared services), has estimated that the government's demand for datacentre space will increase from 300 square metres to 1500 square metres between now and the 2012/2013 financial year. The group is looking for just one vendor to meet that demand in a five-year datacentre and accommodation services contract. There will be two options to extend, each also five years, bringing the potential contract length to 15 years. The datacentre had to be in Victoria and was preferably to be Tier 3, the tender documents said. The group also preferred that all the datacentre space be in one complex, at least 10 kilometres away from its existing datacentres. Peter Blades, the CEO of shared Services agency CenITex said yesterday at Gartner's Sydney Symposium that the Victorian Government currently had 23 datacentres in total.
